Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's lacrosse team fell to MAAC foe Niagara, 21-13, on Leonidoff Field on Saturday. The Red Foxes fall to 3-7, with a 0-2 record in the MAAC, while Niagara improves to 7-3, with a 3-1 record in the conference.
Marist trailed 12-6 at the half, as Megan McNerney scored four of her game-high six goals in the first half to lead the Purple Eagles.
The Red Foxes then went on a 5-1 run to open the second half, cutting the lead to 13-11 with 20:44 remaining in the game.
Niagara was able to overcome the rally, however, and pull away for the victory, outscoring Marist 8-2 over the final twenty minutes of play.
Kelly Sullivan (Lindenhurst, NJ) and Maria Stehn (Massapequa, NY) each scored three goals, with Stehn adding two assists to lead the Red Foxes. Lauren Sherman (Media, PA) and Brandi Petersen (Syracuse, NY) scored two goals apiece, as Sherman also dished out two assists.
Megan Sickler (Kingston, NY) was in goal for over 47 minutes for Marist and collected six saves, before Kate Haberbusch (Montclair, NJ) took over and made four saves.
McNerney led Niagara with six goals, while Sandra Gallegos tallied five goals and seven assists in the win. Ashley Grosso had three goals and three assists. Rachel Jones also played well, scoring four goals.
Michelle Nucci played the entire game in goal for the Purple Eagles and had eight saves.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, April 13th, when they host Canisius in a MAAC game on Leonidoff Field. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
