Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's lacrosse team defeated conference rival Canisius 15-4, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes improve to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Canisius drops to 0-7 on the season and 0-4 in league action.
The Golden Griffs took an early 2-1 lead, before Maria Stehn (Massapequa, NY) scored the goal to tie it at 2-2 at 21:02. Canisius tied it at three on a goal by Erin Westenfield at 17:57 of the first half. Marist scored ten unanswered goals to seal the victory.
Kelly Sullivan (Lindenhurst, NJ) and Stehn led the Red Foxes with five goals each, while Maria Reoch (Shirley, NY) and Katie Tutak (North Tonawanda, NY) netted two apiece for Marist.
The Red Foxes outshot the Golden Griffs 27-5, while also taking the advantage in ground balls23-13.
Mellanie Nai (Suffield, Conn.) started in goal for Marist, giving up four goals in 60 minutes of action. Her counterpart, Sarah Royer, made 12 saves while giving up 15 goals in the game for Canisius.
The Red Foxes return to action Wednesday, April 16th, when they host conference foe Siena at 3:30 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
