Women's Lacrosse Falls To Fairfield, 10-7

April 26, 2003

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-Marist scored four straight goals in the first 10:07 of regulation but Fairfield answered with a seven-goal run of their own, en route to a 10-7 win today on University Field in women's lacrosse action. The win snaps a two-game skid, and improves the Stags MAAC record to a perfect 5-0 (7-8 overall), while the loss drops Marist to 3-3 (6-8 overall) in the MAAC.

Marist controlled the tempo early, winning the opening draw and controlling possession for the first several minutes of play. Maria Stehn (Massapequa, NY) got the Red Foxes on the board with an unassisted goal at 27:42, then assisted on Brandi Peterson's (Syracuse, NY) goal at 23:34. Kelly Sullivan (Lindenhurst, NJ) added another off an assist by Lauren Sherman (Media, PA) at 22:41, then Stehn made it 4-0 with an unassisted goal at 19:53.

Senior captain Megan Main stopped the bleeding and began to turn the tables in favor of the Stags with an unassisted goal at 14:58. Rookie Beth Loffredo cut the deficit in half with an unassisted goal at 11:17, then Main recorded back to back unassisted tallies at 8:15 and 6:32 to even the score. Loffredo gave Fairfield their first lead of the game with 3:20 left in the first half. The Stags would not give up the lead for the rest of the afternoon as they finished the first frame ahead 5-4.

Sophomore Meghan Ryan opened the second half scoring for Fairfield with an unassisted goal at 27:44, then Jessica Conahan completed the run with a goal off a nifty pass by Kathleen Dillon at 21:25. Stehn answered for Marist with a goal off a dish by Sherman at 19:31. Sherman would bring the Red Foxes within one with a goal off an assist by Peterson at 16:15, but Fairfield played sound team defense and Loffredo stopped the Marist run with a goal off an assist by Conahan at 10:32.

Francesca DiLorenzo (Nyack, NY) scored for Marist with 4:54 left to once again bring the Red Foxes within one, but Loffredo won the ensuing draw control sprinted the length of the field and buried her shot into the bottom right corner to kill the momentum. Main would round out the scoring with her fourth of the day with 3:30 remaining.

Monica Janowitz made three saves between the pipes today, allowing seven goals in the win. Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) made eleven saves for Marist in the loss.

The Red Foxes return to action Tuesday, April 29th when they host Central Connecticut State University on Leonidoff Field at 3:00 p.m.
