Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Sacred Heart running back Ed Pricolo had two touchdown runs to go with a pair of touchdown tosses from quarterback Dan Ammel to lead the visiting Pioneers to a 38-10 win over homestanding Marist on a rain-soaked, muddy Saturday evening at Leonidoff Field. Sacred Heart improved to 3-3 with the win, while the Red Foxes dropped to 2-4 overall.
Pricolo got things started for the Pioneers when he took a 17-yard pass from Ammel and barged into the end zone for the game's opening score just 3:51 into the contest.
The Red Foxes then answered with a methodical 17-play drive that ate up nearly nine minutes and netted a 21-yard field goal from freshman placekicker Bradley Rowe (Stratham, N.H.).
The Pioneers came right back, however, and scored once more when Pricolo blazed down the right sideline for a 58-yard score to make the score 14-3 Sacred Heart.
After Marist senior quarterback James Luft (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) was picked off deep in Red Foxes territory by Sacred Heart's David Kaloyanides, the Pioneers increased the advantage when wideout Joey Henley scored on a 7-yard pass from Ammel as time expired in the first quarter.
Sacred Heart continued to pour it on at the outset of the second quarter when running back Jason Payne took the handoff and raced through the Marist defense down the left sideline for a 49-yard score, making the margin 28-3 with 13:37 left in the half.
The Red Foxes refused to yield however and converted another long drive into points when freshman fullback Obozua Ehikioya (West Hempstead, N.Y.) rumbled into the end zone from a yard out to pull Marist within 17.
After the Pioneers shut down a Red Foxes drive at their own 32, Marist snapped the ball over the head of freshman punter Kevin Faughnan (New Canaan, Conn.). Faughnan raced back to his own goal line and kicked the ball through the back of the end zone for a Sacred Heart safety, making the score 30-10 heading into the second half.
Marist's special teams continued to struggle in the early going of the second half after a punt snap again went awry, forcing Faughnan to boot the ball through his own end zone again for a second safety. On the ensuing kickoff from its own 20, Marist gave up a 70-yard kickoff return for touchdown to Sacred Heart's James Wright to give the Pioneers a 28-point lead.
Ehikioya ripped Sacred Heart all night, tallying 143 yards on 26 carries and the touchdown. Pricolo totaled 110 yards on 16 runs.
Luft led the Red Foxes with 95 yards through the air on 10-for-23 passing with the interception to his credit. His 10 completions gives him 187 for his career, 27 short of tying Jim Cleary (1980-83) for second in the school's overall record book for career completions. Ammel led the Pioneers with 6-for-15 passing for 74 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Junior wideout Guy Smith (New Milford, Conn.) led the Red Foxes' receiving attack with seven catches for 83 yards. Henley's two catches for 25 yards led Sacred Heart.
Marist, who is 2-0 in the MAAC, will look to stay undefeated next Saturday at 1 p.m. with a road contest at conference foe La Salle. Sacred Heart will host the MAAC's St. Peter's at 1:00 p.m. also on Saturday.
