Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Marist men's soccer team (10-7), the #3 seed in this weekend's MAAC Tournament, will play fourth-seeded Rider, the host school, Sunday at 12 p.m. for the conference championship. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Red Foxes advanced to the finals by defeating second-seeded St. Peter's 2-1 yesterday. Sophomore forward Keith Detelj scored his team-leading 10th and 11th goals of the season to lead the team to victory. Detelj became just the 13th player in school history to score 11 goals in a season and moved into ninth place on the Marist all-time scoring list with 49 career points.
Rider upset top-seeded Loyola 3-1 in the other semifinal behind three goals by Sandro DeCristofaro. The Broncs beat the Red Foxes 2-1 last Sunday at Rider.
Marist will be looking to capture its first MAAC Tournament title and NCAA berth since 2000 and second overall. The Red Foxes knocked off Fairfield and Loyola in the conference tourney that season before falling to host IUPUI in the Play-In game.
Pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be revealed 4:30 p.m. Monday. The selections will be announced live on ESPNews.
