Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's lacrosse was selected to finish the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Lacrosse League in fourth place in a poll of the leagues seven head coaches, announced by the conference office this afternoon. Juniors Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY) and Lauren Sherman (Media, PA)were voted onto the Preseason All-MAAC team.
Marist, which upset top-seeded Fairfield in the 2003 MAAC Tournament, received 27 points in earning the number four selection. Fairfield, who won the 2003 MAAC Regular Season Title is selected as the favorite to win, earning 47 points. LeMoyne was tabbed second with 43 points after winning the 2003 title. Niagara earned 34 points, followed by Marist, with Manhattan being picked fifth with 22 points, followed by Siena (14) and Canisius (9).
Leahy, a graduate of New Hyde Park, NY, earned Preseason All-MAAC Team honors on the defensive side. As a sophomore she earned All-MAAC Second Team accolades, as she played and started all 17 games for the Red Foxes. She recorded 66 ground balls on the year and helped hold opponents to 11 goals per game as a member of the defensive unit.
Sherman, a graduate of Penncrest High School, played in 16 games as a sophomore for the Red Foxes, making 15 starts. She tallied 14 goals and dished out 12 assists, finishing the year fourth with 26 points. She was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team at the attack, after earning MAAC All-Academic Team honors as a sophomore.
Marist will open the 2004 campaign under first-year head coach Noelle Cebron at St. Joseph's on March 12th, with the home opener a week later versus St. Bonaventure. The Red Foxes will kick off MAAC play on April 4th in Syracuse, NY against LeMoyne in a rematch of the 2003 MAAC Championship game.
