Baseball Completes Saturday Sweep With 12-5 Win Over West Virginia

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman second baseman Travis Musolf collected three hits and starter George Heath struck out seven over six innings as Marist defeated West Virginia, 12-5, in game two of the 10th Annual Hughes Bros. Baseball Challenge at Brooks Field. Marist won its first game of the day, and the season, defeating host UNC Wilmington, 11-9, earlier in the day.

The Red Foxes, winners of the last two, move to 2-3 on the season. West Virginia, meanwhile, has dropped its last three and dips to 1-3 on the young season.

Heath, making his second start of the season, improved to 1-1 allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks for Marist. Mountaineer junior Shawn Miller evened his mark at 1-1 allowing seven run, five earned, on two hits and four walks. Brian Krummenacker scattered four hits over three innings, striking out two, for the save.

Tyler Brock, Bryan Towler and Eric Johnson each had a pair of hits and a pair of runs batted for Marist. Towler doubled twice while Musolf scored three runs and stole a base.

WVU junior centerfielder Lee Fritz went 3-for-5 to with a double and a run scored. Grant Psomas, Cutis Clinton and Michael Christoforo all had two hits for WVU.

Marist jumped to an 8-1 lead after three innings scoring four in the first and two in the second and third. In the first, the Red Foxes scored four runs without a hit, taking advantage of four walks and two hit batters. In the second, Keith Brachold and Jimmy Board stroked back-to-back doubles to key the two-run inning. Johnson doubled in the third scoring Brock, who opened the frame with a walk, and scored from third on Musolf's two-out drag bunt single to second base.

WVU scored single runs in the first four innings. Clinton had a RBI single in the first and Tim Edmeads scored on a fielder's choice in the second. Psomas doubled home Fritz in the third and Jake Serfass doubled in Christoforo, who singled to lead off the fourth.

Marist put the game out of reach in the sixth and seven innings, plating a pair of runs in each. Johnson drove in his second run of the game in the sixth scoring Towler with a single to right. Brock's two-out single to center highlighted the seventh.

Marist looks for the three-game sweep on Sunday, when it takes on host UNC-Wilmington at 1:00 pm.
