Kingston, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-3 decision to non-conference foe Ohio State this afternoon at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY. The Red Foxes fall to 2-2 on the year, while the Buckeyes improve to 4-2.
Ohio State, ranked 19th in the nation, got all the offense it would need in the first quarter, scoring six goals in a 10:11 span, starting with a goal by Chris Brown with 11:13 to play in the first stanza. First quarter scoring was ended by Tom Randisi who tallied with 1:02 to play in the first quarter. Randisi would make the score 7-0, touching net with 9:22 to play in the second quarter.
Marist answered 50 seconds later with it only goal of the half, when Pat Van Horne netted a pass from Sean Sweeney. The Buckeyes would score again to take an 8-1 lead into the intermission.
Marist netted the final two goals of the game, Sweeney from Jay Nahama with six seconds to play in the third quarter, and Billy Duerr from Brian Diele, with 1:58 to play in the game. Nahama won 7-11 of the face-offs he contested on the afternoon.
Steve Gravino faced 27 shots in the game, making 16 saves, as well as recording eight ground balls, in 60 minutes of action. Tony Russo picked up the win for Ohio State, making six saves in 45:00, allowing two goals. John Miller started the fourth quarter, and allowed a goal while making three saves. Drew May played the final 1:01 for the Buckeyes and did not face a shot.
Randisi was the only player for either team to score two goals, and Ben Wolff tallied a game-high three points for Ohio State, with a goal and two assists. The Buckeyes had 11 players tally a point in the game, and five finish with two points, other then Randisi.
Sweeney had a goal and an assist to pace the Red Foxes, who were out shot 31-25 in the game. Marist had 29 groundballs, to the Buckeyes 35, and both teams won nine face-offs on the day. Marist was 20-28 on clear attempts, while Ohio State was 21-25.
Ohio State scored on a man-up opportunity in the third quarter, marking the first time in four games that the Red Foxes man-down defense allowed a short-handed goal.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, March 27th, when they return to MAAC Lacrosse League play, hosting Mt. St. Mary's at 1:00 pm.
