Red Foxes Sweep MAAC Men's Lacrosse League Weekly Awards

April 12, 2004

After an outstanding week in which the Red Foxes remained undefeated in conference play, the Marist College men's lacrosse team swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards. This is the first time this season that Marist has swept the weekly honors, bringing the award total to four.

Sophomore goalkeeper Steve Gravino was named the Defensive Player of the Week after posting a 2-0 record with 25 saves and a 6.50 GAA, while also recording three groundballs. In a battle of undefeated teams on April 8th, Gravino made 13 saves, including eight in the third quarter, to hold off a late charge by Canisius, securing the 10-8 win. Gravino then went on to make 12 saves in a win over Siena on Saturday. For the season Gravino yields an 8.00 GAA, while starting all nine games.

Fellow sophomore Billy Duerr earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after tallying five goals and three assists. The midfielder keyed the 10-8 victory over Canisius scoring four goals and an assist, while adding six groundballs. Against Siena, he notched a goal, two assists and two groundballs in the victory. For the season, Duerr has 11 goals and five assists.

Joining Duerr and Gravino is Keith Detelj who was named Rookie of the Week after sparking Marist to victory with a four-goal performance against Siena. The midfielder tallied three consecutive goals in that game, including the game-winner and also added seven ground balls. Detelj also had a solid game against Canisius, with one ground ball for the Red Foxes. On the year, the rookie leads the Red Foxes with 14 goals and 22 ground balls.

The Red Foxes (5-4, 4-0 MAAC) are back in action on Tuesday, April 13th as they host Lafayette at 4:00pm on Leonidoff Field.
