POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Joshua Balcarcel and
Dylan Bedell of the Marist men's lacrosse team was recognized as USILA Division I Scholar All-Americans, the USILA announced late last week. The duo is the first pair of Red Foxes to earn the recognition in the same season since 2018.
A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.
The Red Foxes have a rich history of fellow Scholar All-Americans. Most recently, Joe Tierney was recognized as a Scholar All-American in 2021, prior to that Peyton Smith was recognized as a Scholar All-American in 2020. The pair of Brian Corrigan '18 and Gannon Morrison '18 earned the honor following the 2018 season, marking the first time in program history that two players have earned the recognition in the same season. The prestigious group also includes J.D. Recor '17, Joseph Radin '16, Corey Zindell '11, and Head Coach
Dave Scarcello '15.
As a senior, Balcarcel recorded team highs in goals (30) and assists (21) for 51 points, en route to earning All-MAAC First Team status. In his final season as a Red Fox, Balcarcel totaled 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points, aiding Marist to a berth in the MAAC Semifinals.
As a senior this past season, Bedell was named to the All-MAAC second team as a face off specialist. Bedell won 210-of-351 face off attempts and totaled 86 ground balls this past season.
