Women's Lacrosse Earns 9-8 MAAC Win Over Fairfield

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's lacrosse team earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the year, defeating Fairfield 9-8, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes improve to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC, while the Stags fall to 3-9 on the year and 2-2 in conference action.

Lauren Sherman wasted no time in giving the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead, netting her first of two goal 40 seconds into the contest. Fairfield would answer with three goals of its own, taking a 3-1 lead with 13:18 to play. The Red Foxes rallied to tie the score on goals by Katie Tutak and Francesco DeLorenzo, and entered the intermission at 3-3.

The teams traded goals in the second half; with Marist taking 4-3 and 5-4 leads with 21:59 and 19:06 to play respectively. Fairfield tallied back-to-back goals to pull ahead 6-5 with 16:11 to play. Maria Reoch knotted the score once again at 6-6 just 19 seconds later, and Marist would take an 7-6 lead with 13:05 to play on Christine Connell's second goal of the afternoon. Fairfield would tie the score with 8:00 to play, and Tutak gave Marist an 8-7 edge with 6:46 to play. The Stags tied the score for the final time with 2:51 to play, before Heather Kennedy netted the game-winning-goal on a free position shot with 1:03 to play.

Tutak, Sherman and Connell each tallied a pair of goals in the game, with Connell also added two assists. Heather Ripp made eight saves in net for the Red Foxes, to earn the win.

Beth Loffredo tallied three points, two goals and an assist, as did Jessica Conahan, one goal and two assists, to pace the Stags offensive effort. Kathleen Crane made four saves in the contest for Fairfield.

Marist ended the game out shooting Fairfield 20-18 and held a 24-8 advantage in groundballs. The Red Foxes forced 24 Stag turnovers in the contest, while committing only 18 of their own.

Marist returns to action on Sunday, as it hosts MAAC Lacrosse League opponent Manhattan in a 1:00 pm contest. The Red Foxes will hold a pre-game ceremony to honor the graduating seniors on the women's lacrosse team.
