Utica, NY- The Marist College water polo team placed third at the CWPA Northeastern Championship held at Utica College this afternoon. The Red Foxes bounced back from a 15-2 loss in game one to defeat Connecticut College 11-10 in double overtime.
Against Connecticut College, Susan Grant netted the game-winner with :08 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Red Foxes the win. Trailing 9-7 with 2:44 remaining in the game, Grant sent home a pass from Joelle Evanousky to pull the Red Foxes within one. Grant the tied the game 9-9 with :35 on the clock to send it to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Carolyn Rosler gave the Red Foxes an 10-9 lead with :46 remaining. Connecticut answered with a goal of their own 15 seconds later.
Grant led the Red Foxes with four goals, while Rosler tallied two goals and an assist. Evanousky also added two goals and an assist. Goalie Amanda Long made seven saves in net.
In the first game, Marist fell to a tough Brown University team. Freshman Jillian Jefferds and junior Ashley Woerner recorded the only two Marist goals of the day.
The Red Foxes will be back in action May 1-2 as they host the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Water Polo League Tournament.
