Syracuse, NY - In their first meeting since last Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) final, the Marist College women's lacrosse team was edged by LeMoyne 17-16 in double overtime this afternoon. The Red Foxes fall to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC, while the Dolphins improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action and move into sole possession of first place.
Trailing 16-14 heading into the second overtime period, senior Katie Tutak pulled the Red Foxes within one scoring at the 1:32 mark. Lauren Serge then tied the score at 16-16 netting her second goal of the game at the 1:04 mark. The deadlock did not last long however, as the Dolphins' Kristen Malecki put the game away 11 seconds later netting her third goal of the game.
The Dolphins wasted no time taking quick 1-0 lead, 27 seconds into the contest. After trading goals, the Red Foxes went on to score five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead at the 17:06 mark. LeMoyne would answer with three goals of its own, pulling within 6-5 with 12:56 to play. The Red Foxes countered with three unanswered goals on by Lauren Sherman, Christine Connell and Tutak to increase the score to 9-5 with 6:26 left in the half. At the 2:42 mark, the Dolphins began a three-goal rally to close the half with a score of 9-8.
Marist struck first in the second half as Serge converted a free position shot at the 25:05 mark. The Dolphins, however, went on a four-goal run sparked by Megan Keddy to take a 12-10 lead with 8:44 left to play. After trading a pair of goals over the next five minutes, Maria Reoch connected with Connell to pull the Red Foxes within one with 1:49 remaining. Connell the tied the game 14-14 with 53 seconds remaining on the clock to send the game to overtime.
Tutak and Connell each tallied four goals in the game. Serge, Sherman, and Tara Mullins chipped in with two goals apiece. Heather Ripp made 13 saves in net for the Red Foxes, while LeMoyne's Erica Henderson stopped 11 shots.
Malecki, Liz Hewitt and Amanda Keegan each scored three goals for LeMoyne while Caitlin Lowie notched a game-high five assists.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Saturday, April 24th as they travel to Canisius for a 10:00am start. Marist closes the regular season on Sunday, April 25th at Niagara.
