Niagara, NY - The Marist College women's lacrosse closed the 2004 season with a heartbreaking 17-11 loss to Manhattan this afternoon in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament semifinal. The Red Foxes finish the season at 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the MAAC.
Down 16-7 with 4:41 the Red Foxes mounted a comeback scoring four unanswered goals. The streak started as senior Katie Tutak converted a free position shot. Fellow senior Maria Reoch followed by netting a free position shot 35 seconds later. Senior Taylor Conger scored at the 2:25 mark. Reoch scored Marist's final goal of the year with 2:07 remaining sending home a pass by Lauren Sherman. The Jaspers made the score 17-11 with 57 seconds remaining as Catherine Dunbar tallied her second goal of the game.
The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the first half as Tara Mullins scored off a feed from Sherman at the 26:51 mark. Manhattan answered with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Marist tied the scored at 23:52 as Christine Connell netted her 34th goal of the season. The Jaspers took the lead for good a minute and a half later as Mary Dudek scored back-to-back goals to pull ahead 5-3. The Jaspers would go on to close the half by scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
Reoch led the way for Marist with four goals while Tutak added three. Sherman chipped in with three assists on the day.
The Jaspers were led by Dudek, Nora Jacquette, and Victoria Carman who scored four goals apiece. Carman also added two assists.
Heather Ripp made 12 saves in net for the Red Foxes, while Manhattan's Ashley Devins made 11 stops.
Manhattan outshot Marist 34-30 and had a 22-9 advantage in groundballs. The Red Foxes had 20 turnovers while the Jaspers only had eight. The Jaspers also converted 5-7 free position shots, while the Red Foxes were 3-6. Marist had a 17-13 advantage in draw controls.
