POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist Women's Swimming and Diving team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC with a convincing 178-106 win over Fairfield at the James J. McCann Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Marist was again led by Jamie Falco (North Haven, Conn.) and Jackie Fountaine (Pawling, N.Y.) who both won two individual events.
Falco, coming off a meet at Rider in which she was a part of three pool records, took the top position in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.90 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:33.69. Falco was followed by teammate Ashley Papuga (Branford, Conn.) in the 100-yard event in a time of 1:03.45. Papuga also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.01. In the 200-yard event Falco topped teammate Cindy Spiecker (Warrington, Pa.) who clocked in at 2:38.69.
In each event that Fountaine won, Marist took the top three positions. She led the Red Fox charge in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.55. She was followed by Savannah Puca (Huntington, N.Y.) in 1:10.95 and Maura Pepin (Windsor, Conn) in 1:13.65 in second and third places, respectively. In the 500-yard freestyle Fountaine again led the field in 5:17.01. Karen Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) finished in second in 5:18.15 while Kelsea Fortner (Mystic, Conn.) took third in 5:33.26.
Other strong performances turned in by Marist swimmers were from Jennifer Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) who won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.32 seconds. Jessica Paul (Meadowbrook, Pa.) took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.73 seconds and finished third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:22.14.
In the 200-yard butterfly freshman Kelsea Fortner followed her in second place in 2:19.47.
In diving action Marist took the top three positions in both the one and three meter events. In the one-meter competition senior Meghan Duffy (Cheshire, Conn.) took first with a final score of 271.65. She was followed by Melissa Mangona (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in second with 246.00 and Anna Sanner (Somerset, Pa.) in third with 239.95. Off the three meter board Mangona took first with a score of 274.45, while Duffy and Sanner follwed her with scores of 266.65 and 232.00, respectively
After two days off from competition the Red Foxes will be back in the pool when the square off with MAAC foe Iona. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the James J. McCann Natatorium on Tuesday night.
