POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Terrence Todd scored on a jumper in the lane with 0.7 seconds left to lift visiting Fairfield over Marist 61-60 in MAAC men's basketball action Thursday at the James J. McCann Center. Fairfield improved to 12-10 (9-4 MAAC) with the win, while Marist dropped to 10-12 overall (7-6 MAAC).
Todd scored 18 to lead the Stags, while Deng Gai added 12. Gai, who came into the contest leading the nation in blocks at 6.0 per game, recorded no blocks in 36 minutes. Both players shared the team lead in rebounds with eight.
Jared Jordan scored 15 points to go with eight assists to lead the Red Foxes, while Shae McNamara added 10.
Marist's Will McClurkin rejoined the team just before Thursday's contest after missing four games due to a violation of institutional and departmental policy. McClurkin recorded eight points and eight rebounds in 36 minutes of action.
After a sluggish start by both squads, Marist surged to a 13-6 lead at the 12:35 mark on a 3-pointer by Jared Jordan. However, Fairfield answered that run with a 15-5 run of their own to go up 19-16 with 8:09 to play on a free throw by Tyquawn Goode. The Red Foxes led 30-28 at the half.
Both squads battled through a seesaw affair in the second half before Fairfield edged out by five (53-48) on a free throw by DeWitt Maxwell with 7:30 to play. McNamara later closed the game to two (57-55) on a tip-in with 1:25 to play, while Ben Farmer tossed in a couple of free throws for the game's sixth tie with 48 seconds to play.
Todd then went down on the other end and scored on a jumper with 21 seconds to put the Stags up by a bucket before McNamara connected on a long 3-pointer near the top of the key to set up Todd's game-winning heroics.
Marist shot 41.2 percent (21-for-51) for the game, while Fairfield shot 47.9 (23-for-48). Fairfield connected on 36.4 percent (4-for-11) of its 3-point attempts, while Marist went 35.3 percent (12-for-34) from long-range. The Red Foxes made six of their eight free throws (75 percent), while Fairfield went 11-for-17 (64.7 percent).
Marist will travel to Manhattan on Sunday for its next game which tips at 2 p.m.
