Marist's frontcourt duo of Kristin Keller (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) combined for 34 points (17 each) to power the women's basketball team past Loyola today. Camara recorded her eleventh double-double of the season in Marist's eleventh consecutive win, taking the Foxes to 17-6 overall, 11-3 MAAC. Marist remains in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with the win.
The Greyhounds skipped out to an early 4-0 lead just one minute into the game, and kept the offensive pressure on as Marist struggled offensively. Keller scored seven of Marist's eight points in the first seven minutes to tie the game, 8-8 at 12:52. Neither team could get a offensive rhythm going and the Foxes would not score again for five minutes when Camara hit her second jumper of the day. Four straight from Katie Scherle pulled the Greyhounds ahead 14-12, but a Keller layup followed by two made free-throws from classmate Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) gave Marist a 16-14 lead. Loyola scored twice more while Marist could only get to the hoop once, tying the game at 18-18 going into the break.
Marist came out swinging in the second half, opening up with a 13-2 run including six points from Vetter and a huge Camara three to take a 31-20 lead at 12:19. The Hounds went on a 5-1 mini-run to pull within seven, but the Foxes continued to pour it on in the paint. Camara scored six-straight to keep Marist ahead at the Red Foxes were up 41-32 at 2:37. Loyola was forced to foul Marist as they tried to stay in the contest and Foxes went 8 of 11 from the line to seal the win. Keller was a perfect four of four in the last 20 seconds of the contest as Marist staved off a late Loyola run that included four points from Scherle.
The Red Foxes shot an improved 38.5% from the field in the second half after going just 7-30 in the first (30% overall) while Loyola drained 30% of its shots also. Keller and Camara led all scorers with 17 each while Camara added 10 rebounds and Keller recorded seven boards, three assists two steals and a block. Keller has had at least one block in Marist's last 14 games and is just six away from third all-time in Marist history. Sophomore point guard Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, NJ) led all rebounders with 11, just one shy of her career high, while tallying five assists and four steals.
Scherle led Loyola with 14 points and nine rebounds while Krystle Harrington picked up 12 points, four assists and four steals. Each team committed 12 turnovers while the Foxes had nine steals as a team.
The Marist women will be back in action on Thursday when they take on Niagara at the McCann Center at 7:00 p.m.
