Marist Water Polo Splits Four at Bucknell Invitational

Feb. 20, 2005

Lewisburg, Pa. - The Marist water polo team picked up its first wins of the 2005 season this weekend, defeating Maryland and Slippery Rock at the Bucknell Invitational. Sophomore 2MD Jillian Jefferds scored five goals, including two in each win.

The Red Foxes won their opener at the two-day invitational, defeating Maryland 8-5 to avenge a 6-4 loss to the Terps at the Princeton Invitational last weekend. Marist scored four times in the second quarter to go ahead for good. Jefferds scored twice, as did sophomore driver Mary Grisey.

In Sunday's win over Slippery Rock, Marist made a 3-2 halftime lead stand up as Grisey, freshman driver Allison Rader and sophomore 2M Katie Swanson scored goals to add to Jefferds' two. Slippery Rock was ranked 10th in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association regional poll.

Marist dropped contests to nationally-ranked Princeton and the regionally-ranked host Bison. In the 13-2 loss to the #19 Tigers (also ranked fourth in the CWPA poll) late Saturday night, senior driver Carolyn Rosler and junior utility Amanda Long scored for the Red Foxes. Marist was down just 2-1 after one period before Princeton pulled away with five goals in the second quarter. Against Bucknell today, Jefferds, Rosler, Swanson and senior utility Susan Grant all tallied goals, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes fell 9-4. It was the first goal of the season for Grant. Bucknell is ranked sixth in the CWPA poll.

Marist heads out to the West Coast next weekend to take part in the 24-team Gaucho Invitational at UC-Santa Barbara. Some of the top squads in the nation are expected to take part, including defending national champions Southern California. Pairings will be announced later this week.
