Philadelphia, Pa. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (1-2, 1-0 MAAC) earned its first win of the season today in its MAAC Lacrosse League opener, defeating host St. Joseph's by the score of 6-5. Six different Red Foxes tallied goals.
Marist jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by junior midfielder Bill Duerr, his team-leading seventh of the year, and sophomore midfielder Mike McGuire. McGuire's goal was his first of the season and second of his career. After the Hawks (1-6, 0-1 MAAC) scored twice to tie the game, junior attack Andrew Walsh took a pass from McGuire and fired the ball past goalie Dan Morrisey to give Marist a 3-2 lead at the half.
With 5:22 remaining in the third period and the score knotted at three, sophomore midfielder Matt Donovan put the Red Foxes ahead to stay with his second goal of the season.
Freshman attack Pat Van Hall and junior midfielder Tim Iuculano tallied the final two Marist goals. Junior Stephen Gravino made nine saves in goal.
The two teams played strong man-down defense throughout as neither the Red Foxes nor the Hawks allowed a man-up goal.
Marist is back in action Saturday, March 26 when it opens the home portion of its schedule against MAAC foe Canisius. Game time is 1 p.m. at Leonidoff Field.
