Marist Shuts Down Canisius, 16-8

Poughkeepsie, NY - Senior captain Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) recorded 12 saves in goal today to lead the Red Foxes past visiting Canisius for a critical MAAC victory. With the win, Marist improves to 3-7 (2-2 MAAC) while Canisius dropped to 6-5 (1-2 MAAC). Freshman Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) led the Red Foxes with four goals and one assist while senior Lauren Serge (Albany, NY) had her second consecutive hat trick with three goals.

Marist was in control from the beginning of the contest, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead paced by two goals from Serge. Canisius' Whitney Card snuck in a goal at 17:57 before Marist scored three straight to go up 8-1. Canisius tallied two more goals in the last two minutes of the first half to pull within five, 8-3 at halftime. Ripp had six saves in the first half for the Foxes, while senior Lauren Sherman (Media, PA) had a goal and an assist to boost the offense.

Canisius's Alana Chan, who would later leave the game with a red card, scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half, surrounding a solid Kate Haberbusch (Montclair, NJ) goal off a feed from Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY). Marist kept the pressure on with back-to-back goals from Christine Connell (Westbury, NY) and Serge. Canisius scored two more before Marist went on a 5-0 run that included three goals from Diener to secure the win.

Nine different players had goals for Marist in the win, with Diener and Serge leading the way with four and three each, respectively. Ripp led the defense with six groundballs to go along with her 12 saves. Joanna Maehr (Stony Brook, NY) paced Marsit with three caused turnovers and three draw controls as well. Cansius was led by Chan with three goals while Card and Erica Nasca had two a piece.

Marist will be in action again tomorrow, hosting Niagara at 1:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
