Final Stats

Fairfield, CT - Freshman standout Lindsey Diener scored four goals for her fifth hat trick of the season as Marist snapped a three-game skid, downing Fairfield 12-8. With the win, the Foxes improve to 2-4 on the season and start out MAAC play at 1-0. The game was also the first conference contest for Fairfield (2-6 overall, 1-0 MAAC), who had not lost a MAAC opener in four years. Senior captain Heather Ripp had a tremendous afternoon in the cage, raking in 14 saves while grabbing three groundballs.

Marist came out of the gates swinging, jumping out to a 3-0 lead just six minutes into the game. Joanna Maehr scored on a free position shot at 1:51 to put Marist on the board first. Right off the ensuing draw control, senior Francesca DeLorenzo charged down the field and found the back of the net just 10 seconds later for Marist. Classmate Lauren Serge gave the Foxes the 3-0 advantage at 5:36 with her first goal of the afternoon.

Fairfield scored the next two goals to pull within one, but Marist's Jessica O'Brien kept Marist going with a goal at the 20:50 mark. Just over a minute later, Kate Haberbusch hammered one home off a feed from senior Christine Connell. Gina Wolynski brought the Stags within two, 5-3, seven minutes later, but Connell scored off a feed from Diener just before the end of the half. Marist took a 6-3 lead into the break.

Just a minute into the second half, Serge struck again for Marist, evading her defender and beating Fairfield goalkeeper Kristin Genovese. At 5:31, Diener, who had been quiet offensively in the first, scored her first goal of the game with an assist from senior Lauren Sherman, putting Marist up 8-3. After a timeout, Fairfield's Julia Poli scored a quick goal for the Stags, but Marist would answer with three straight. Diener scored an unassisted goal at 11:30 and quickly went the distance again after her draw control, scoring for Marist at 11:47. Connell picked up a nice pass from Sherman for her second goal of the day at 16:03, putting the Foxes up 11-4. Lara Hannigan hit back-to-back shots for Fairfield followed by an Ashley Chappell goal to pull Fairfield within four, but Diener struck again to put the Foxes up for good.

Diener finished the day with four goals and one assist along with four draw controls and four groundballs. She now leads Marist with 25 goals so far this season. Senior Patricia Leahy had a solid day on defense, picking up four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Serge led the Red Foxes with four caused turnovers while picking up one ground ball and two draw controls to go along with her two goals.

The Red Foxes will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Siena for a 12:00 p.m. match-up on Saturday April 9.
