Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, NY -
The senior-freshman offensive tandem of Lauren Serge (Albany, NY) and Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) was at it again for Marist, each scoring another hat trick with three and four goals each, respectively. Their efforts would fall short, however, as Lindsay Butera led Lafayette to victory, scoring four goals in the Leopards 10-8 win tonight. During tonight's game, Serge became Marist's all-time career games played leader, appearing in 62 and starting all but two of those.
Lafayette jumped on the board first with a goal by Kaleigh Mountain off an assist from Madalyn Booth at 27:13. The Leopards scored again just under three minutes later off a breakaway by Lindsay Butera for her first goal of the night. A free position goal by Diener put the Red Foxes on the board at 23:07 but Lafayette's Natalie Kuhnert gave her team the 3-1 advantage three minutes later.
The Red Foxes went on a 3-0 run during a three and a half minute period that included two goals from Serge and another from Diener. Marist held a 4-3 lead with 16:11 in the half. Both teams struggled to retain possession of the ball and Lafayette capitalized on several Marist defensive miscues to score five consecutive goals to close out the half. Butera netted three in the last 12 minutes to help her team to an 8-4 advantage at the break.
Diener started the scoring quickly for Marist with an unassisted goal just a minute and a half into the game. Lafayette would score two quick goals following that, building its lead to 10-5. Serge had another goal at the 20:07 mark, pulling the Foxes within four and sparking the offense. Senior Christine Connell (Westbury, NY) hammered one home at 16:57 before Diener scored her fourth five minutes later. With Lafayette up 10-8, both goalkeepers made clutch saves in the closing minutes, and the teams remained scoreless for the last 11 minutes.
Jaclyn Kushner posted eight saves in goal in a solid outing for Lafayette. Marist's Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) and Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, NY) split time in net, recording three and five saves respectively. Burkhard did not allow any goals in the 23:20 that she played.
With four goals, Diener recorded her eighth hat trick of the season and leads Marist with 41 goals. She also picked up five ground balls and one draw control tonight. The Marist defense was paced by sophomore Joanna Maehr (Stony Brook, NY) and senior Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY) six and four groundballs, respectively, along with three caused turnovers each. Serge led Marist with three draw controls along with her three goals. Freshman Val Amodeo (Northport, NY) had a season-high five groundballs tonight.
Lafayette's Butera added three groundballs to her tally while Farrell Sharkey and Ashley Dvorak had five and six groundballs each. Mountain had two goals, with six Leopards scoring at least one.
With the loss, Marist falls to 4-8 (3-2 MAAC), while Lafayette improves to 1-10 (0-4 Patriot). The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Iona in a critical MAAC contest at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Marist will honor its six seniors on the squad.
