Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, NY -
The Marist seniors had a tremendous afternoon on Senior Day for the Red Foxes with each of the four offensive players scoring and recording at least three points. Defensively, seniors Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY) and Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) led the way with seven groundballs and six saves, respectively. After Iona took an early 2-1 lead, Marist jumped into the driver's seat, scoring five straight for a lead they would never relinquish. Marist improves to 5-8 overall, 4-2 MAAC with the win while Iona falls to 3-12 and 0-6 in conference.
Aimee Colon had both of Iona's early goals, scoring the second within five minutes of the first. Between those, senior Francesca DeLorenzo (Nyack, NY) scored her first goal of the afternoon off a pass from freshman Val Amodeo (Northport, NY). Junior Kate Haberbusch (Montclair, NJ) started off a 5-0 run for the Foxes with a goal at 21:48, assisted by senior Lauren Serge (Albany, NY). Freshman standout Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) then scored off a helper from senior Lauren Sherman (Media, PA) before assisting on the next goal from Serge at 17:52, her first of five. Diener found the back of the net again 30 seconds later before senior Christine Connell (Westbury, NY) scored her first of the day to put Marist ahead 6-2.
Iona's Katie Cavanaugh stopped the bleeding with a goal at 13:44 off a free position shot, but the Red Foxes kept coming, closing out the half with four straight goals. Sherman recorded a goal at 12:53, followed closely by one from Serge, assisted by Connell at 12:21. Junior Tara Mullins (Holmdel, NJ) scored for Marist at 7:45 and Serge closed out scoring for the half three minutes later off a feed from Amodeo. Marist led 10-3 at the break.
Jaclyn O'Leary struck first for Iona in the second, but DeLorenzo again scored the first goal of the half to get the Foxes going. After Iona's Roxanne Monte made a save on Marist's next possession, Serge forced a Gael turnover, picked up the groundball and hammered home the Red Foxes' 12th goal. Marist kept the pressure on as Amodeo scored her first goal of the game, with an assist by Connell and classmate Taylor Nesbit (Cheshire, NY) scored her first of the season with help from Sherman. Iona scored two straight with Katie Cavanaugh recording a goal and an assist, before DeLorenzo picked up her third of the day for Marist.
Marist held the 15-6 lead when Cavanaugh and O'Leary teamed up again for an Iona goal at 6:08, but Diener found Connell thirty seconds later for another Marist point. Chloe Koprucki scored the Gaels' last of the contest before Serge recorded the last goal of the afternoon, assisted again by classmate Connell for the 17-8 final.
Ripp recorded six saves along with three caused turnovers and two groundballs while Iona's Monte had nine saves and seven groundballs to her credit. Marist's Leahy was automatic on defense for the Foxes, recording seven groundballs and forcing three Iona turnovers.
Nine different Red Foxes scored during the contest, with Serge leading all scorers with five goals and one assist while picking up four draw controls.
