Red Foxes Drop Heartbreaker at Manhattan, 10-9

Riverdale, NY - The Marist women's lacrosse team took a tough 10-9 loss at the hands of defending MAAC Champions Manhattan this afternoon. Manhattan's Victoria Carman scored the game-winning goal for the Jaspers with just over three minutes left in regulation to give her team a share of the MAAC regular season crown. Marist freshman Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) performed in her usual impressive fashion, scoring five goals to lead the Red Foxes. She now has 48 goals on the season, just one shy of the program's single-season record.

Marist jumped out to a quick start, taking a 4-0 lead by the 16:51 mark, fueled by two goals from Diener and one each from seniors Christine Connell (Westbury, NY) and Francesca DeLorenzo (Nyack, NY). Manhattan's Lauren Civardi responded with back-to-back goals less than 30 second apart to get her team on the board. Marist kept the offensive pressure on with another goal from Diener and one from classmate Val Amodeo (Northport, NY). Carman scored her first of three goals on the day to bring the score to 6-3, Marist, but Amodeo struck again at 3:19, giving the Red Foxes a 7-3 advantage at the break.

Manhattan came out on fire in the second, scoring six unanswered goals, including to from Mary Dudek to go up 9-7 on Marist by the 14:34 mark. Diener came up big for the Foxes, scoring two consecutive goals to tie it up 9-9 with nine minutes left in regulation. Neither team would score for the next six minutes until Carman delivered the fatal blow to Marist at 3:20. The Red Foxes could not convert offensively in the closing minutes and Manhattan took the 10-9 victory.

Seniors Lauren Serge (Albany, NY) and Lauren Sherman (Media, PA) fueled the Marist defense with six groundballs each, while Sherman added two assists. Classmate Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) recorded 13 saves in goal.

Carman and Civardi each had three goals apiece for the Jaspers, while Molly Pheterson paced the defense with seven groundballs. Ashley Devins had 10 saves in goal.

The Red Foxes fell to 5-9 with the loss, 4-3 in the MAAC while Manhattan improved to 7-7 overall and 6-1 in conference. Despite the loss, Marist has earned a bid to the MAAC Tournament and will be the fourth seed.
