Marist Falls to Manhattan in Double Overtime at MAAC Semifinals

April 29, 2005

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Marist women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to number one seeded Manhattan, 11-10 in the MAAC semifinals at Fairfield University this afternoon. After being down by as much as 9-6 in the second half, Marist rallied to come back. Freshman Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) tied the game with three minutes remaining to force overtime. Marist fought through two overtime periods, forcing a sudden victory period in which Manhattan netted the game-winner with 41 seconds on the clock.

The Red Foxes got on the board first when Diener scored off a free position shot at 25:13 to give her team the 1-0 lead. Both offenses stagnated and neither team scored again until 16:31 when Manhattan's Lauren Civardi converted a free position of her own. Civardi found the back of the net again three minutes later to give the Jaspers their first lead of the day, 2-1. Diener answered back to tie it up for Marist at 7:23 but Manhattan's Mary Dudek gave her team the lead 20 seconds later.

The Foxes took a 4-3 lead with back-to-back goals from freshman Ali Carnabuci (Mineola, NY) and senior Lauren Serge (Albany, NY). The Jaspers scored twice with 30 seconds remaining in the half to take a 5-4 lead at the break.

Manhattan's Victoria Carman came out swinging in the second half with two quick goals to put the Jaspers up 7-4. Marist's Carnabuci netted one of her own at 19:43 to pull the Foxes within two. Manhattan had two more goals surrounding Diener's fourth of the day, to take the score to 10-7 Jaspers with 9:55 left in regulation. Diener boosted Marist with a goal at 7:55 before Serge hammered home a big shot at 5:29 to pull her team within one. Diener took the ball in off a Marist clear to tie the game at 10-10 with 3:01 left in the game.

Neither team could score in the closing minutes, forcing two three-minute overtime periods. The Foxes held possession for much of the two overtime periods thanks to two draw controls by senior Christine Connell (Westbury, NY). Marist senior Heather Ripp (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) was solid in goal throughout the extra sessions. The game went into a sudden victory period after two scoreless overtimes. Manhattan won the draw and held onto the ball for most of the period. Ripp had a huge save late in the game, but multiple free position attempts ultimately resulted in Manhattan's Molly Pheterson scoring the game-winner with 41 seconds remaining for the 11-10 win.

Diener led Marist with six goals and two assists while Serge and Carnabuci each had two. Senior Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY) had a tremendous day defensively, tying the school record with eight groundballs and forcing four turnovers. Freshman Kelsey Haggett (Glastonbury, CT) also picked up seven groundballs in a solid defensive effort.

With her six goals today, Diener brought her season total to 54, breaking the record for goals in a single season. Amy Hoey set the mark with 49 goals in 1997. After tallying eight groundballs this afternoon, Leahy broke the record for career groundballs. She will graduate with 143 groundballs after playing just three full seasons (missing her freshman year with injury).

The Red Foxes finished the season at 5-10 (4-3 MAAC) while Manhattan improved to 8-7 with the win.
