Fairfield, Conn. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (2-5) took 20th-ranked Fairfield down to the wire today at Lessing Field before falling 10-9 on Kyle Herman's game-winning goal with 1:47 remaining. Sophomore midfielder Mike McGuire scored three goals, including the game-tying score with 3:24 left. Junior midfielder Bill Duerr had two goals and two assists.
The Red Foxes flew to a 1-0 lead out of the gate as senior attackman Patrick Van Horne took a pass from junior midfielder Tim Iuculano and scored just 10 seconds into the contest. Just three minutes later, McGuire scored off a Duerr pass to put Marist ahead 2-0. After Fairfield scored twice to tie it, Iuculano scored his 16th goal of the season to give the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
The second period was dominated by the Stags as Michael Bocklet scored three goals to give Fairfield a 5-3 halftime lead.
Marist again came out hot in the second half, getting goals from Duerr and junior attackman Andrew Walsh within the first five minutes of the third quarter to knot the game at 5-5. Fairfield would then score twice to take a 7-5 advantage but McGuire scored with 4:51 left in the period to cut the Stag lead to 7-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Van Horne scored his second goal of the game with 11:18 remaining to tie the game for the fifth time. Freshman midfielder Lou Aboyoun recorded his first career assist on that goal. Matt Castele and Greg Downing each scored for Fairfield to put the hosts back in the lead 9-7 but Marist would come back for the sixth and final time as Duerr scored unassisted at the 5:57 mark and, after a cross-checking penalty on Josh Thornton of the Stags, McGuire converted the extra-man opportunity into the tying goal with 3:24 remaining. Duerr had the assist. Herman would win the game for the Stags 1:37 later.
Junior Stephen Gravino made 17 saves in net for the Red Foxes while Tim Gazzini and Michael Kruger split time in the Fairfield cage. Gazzini made four saves and Kruger three.
Both teams played excellent man-down defense throughout the game as the two squads combined to shut down the extra-man opportunity 11 of 13 times.
Marist is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Lafayette for a non-league contest. Game time is 3 p.m.
