POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Andrew Silva's Marist women's water polo program spilt its first two matches against MAAC competition Saturday with a 7-5 overtime victory over Villanova and a 7-6 loss to Wagner in the McCann Center. With the win, the Red Foxes (9-14, 1-1 MAAC) picked up their first-ever win over Villanova.
In the match against the Wildcats, Allison Rader registered three goals to pace the Red Foxes. Katie Swanson also chipped in a pair of tallies, including the game-clinching goal with 53 seconds to go in overtime. Jillian Jefferds scored the go-ahead goal 59 seconds earlier to put Marist ahead for good. Villanova was led by Kim Pare's four goals. Aimee Corsiglia also scored for the Wildcats.
Marist also tallied 15 saves in the game, while Villanova's Jess Wells made nine.
In the Foxes' first match of the day against Wagner, Rader pumped in four goals, while Swanson and Callie Andrysiak chipped in one each in a losing effort. Wagner was led by Billy Hoelck's four goals. Sara Kramer also had two tallies for the visitors, while Courtney Crase had one.
The Marist goalkeeping tandem of Elizabeth Davis and Katy Zweifel had six saves, while the Seahawks were led in net by Katie Hauck's six stops.
Marist will now head to Loudonville, N.Y. on Sunday for a pair of matches, one against Iona at 11:30 a.m., while the other is against host Siena at 4 p.m.
