Detelj Hat Trick Vaults Marist Into MAAC Title Game

May 6, 2005

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Keith Detelj scored three goals, including two in the final six minutes, to lead the fourth-seeded Marist men's lacrosse team (7-7) to a 9-5 win over top-seeded Providence in the MAAC Semifinals. The Red Foxes advance to Sunday's championship game against second-seeded Mount St. Mary's with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle with the Red Foxes getting the only score on junior midfielder Tim Iuculano's unassisted goal. Marist would strike quickly in the second period, getting goals from sophomore midfielder Mike McGuire and senior attackman Patrick Van Horne 44 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the period. Detelj assisted on Van Horne's goal. Iuculano and Detelj added goals later in the period to give the Red Foxes a 5-0 lead with 3:58 remaining until halftime.

Providence struck back with two late first half goals by Brendan Ryan, including a shot at the buzzer off a pass from Tom Kelly. Kelly would draw the Friars (8-8) within 5-3 with a goal 1:56 into the second half.

Van Horne would score for the second time with 2:50 to play in the third period, getting an assist from junior midfielder Bill Duerr. Providence would again rally to make it 6-5 with 10 minutes to play as Dan Giuntini and R.J. Lamontagne found the net early in the fourth quarter.

That would be as close as the Friars would get, however, as the Marist defense kept them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Two goals by Detelj and a tally by junior attackman Andrew Walsh provided the margin of victory.

Junior goalie Stephen Gravino made eight saves, with two of them coming on point-blank shots by Providence's Bennett Murphy. Andrew McMinn made a valiant effort in the Providence net, facing 40 shots and recording 14 saves.

In today's other semifinal, second-seeded Mount St. Mary's held off a rally by third-seeded Manhattan and went on to win 13-11. Matt Warner scored seven goals to lead the Mount to the win.

It was also reported tonight that senior defender Mark Paquette was named to the All-MAAC First Team, not the Second Team as previously reported, due to a re-counting of the ballots.

The Red Foxes will attempt to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history at 12 p.m. Sunday at Leonidoff Field.
