Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (6-7, 5-3 MAAC), the fourth seed for this weekend's MAAC Championships, will take on top-seeded Providence in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Prior to that contest, second-seeded Mount St. Mary's will face third-seeded Manhattan at 4 p.m. Both games and Sunday's championship match will take place at Leonidoff Field.
Marist is led by All-MAAC First Team selections Tim Iuculano and Bill Duerr, both junior midfielders. Iuculano, ranked 16th in the nation in goals per game (2.38), has 43 points this year on 31 goals and 12 assists while Duerr has 41 points on 27 goals and a team-high 14 assists. Senior attackman Patrick Van Horne has 13 goals and three assists including nine in his last four games. Sophomore midfielder Keith Detelj has returned from a nine-game layoff due to illness to post six goals and two assists in his last two games, highlighted by a four-goal performance in the regular season finale against VMI.
All-MAAC Second Teamers Mark Paquette and Stephen Gravino pace the defensive unit. Paquette, a defender, scooped 47 ground balls to co-lead the team with classmate Dan Bellew. Gravino, the primary netminder for the Red Foxes, started all 13 games, made 127 saves and recorded an 8.84 goals-against average. MAAC Rookie of the Year Dan Needle handles the face-off duties for Marist having won 93 of 179 draws during the regular season for a 52% success rate.
Providence (8-7, 7-1 MAAC) is the defending conference champions and the 2005 regular season titlists. Attackman Jonathan Hollister (23 goals, nine assists), midfielder Dan Giuntini (24 goals, seven assists) and attackman Sean Kirwan (16 goals, two assists) key the Friar offense. Attackman Brendan Ryan leads the squad with 12 assists. First Team All-MAAC goalie Andrew McMinn made 122 saves with a 7.22 goals-against average.
The main scoring threat for Mount St. Mary's (7-8, 6-2 MAAC) is attackman Matt Warner, the 2005 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Warner leads the MAAC and is third nationally with 45 goals to go along with 11 assists. The prolific Mount offense features five others with impressive stats: attackmen Dan Hatton (20 goals, 10 assists) and Jason Werner (20 goals, 24 assists) and midfielders Billy Jautze (18 goals, 18 assists), Tilghman Herring (15 goals, eight assists) and Eric Seifert (22 goals, 7 assists). Goalie Dan Whitehurst has 152 saves with an 11.75 goals-against average.
Manhattan (7-6, 6-2 MAAC) looks to attackman Justin Otto (31 goals, 11 assists) to drive its offense. Attackman Eugene Tanner (14 goals, 19 assists) and four other Jaspers, including midfielder Chris Oppito (14 goals, nine assists) and attackman Brian Murray (12 goals, 10 assists) have double-digit goal totals. 2005 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Brett Warmington has recorded 48 ground balls. All-MAAC Second Team selection Justin Henry has taken over the goalkeeping duties with 90 saves and a 9.29 goals-against average.
The winners of today's semifinal contests will meet at 12 p.m. Sunday to decide the MAAC Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pairings for the NCAA Championships will be announced Sunday evening.
On Saturday, Marist will host the YES Clinic at North Field. Currently, there are 80 participants signed up, but walkups will be accepted. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.
The clinic will consist of five lacrosse skill stations in addition to life skills and strength and conditioning stations.
There will also be a parent session at 9 a.m. offering information on admissions, financial aid, recruiting, initial eligibility and sportsmanship.
