Final Stats
Durham, N.H. -
New Hampshire converted on more than half of its 36 shots on goal to take a 20-8 victory over Marist this afternoon. The Red Foxes dropped to 1-1 with the loss while the Wildcats improved to 1-3. A bright spot on the day was the play of freshman Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) who came in off the bench to tally two goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
New Hampshire made a quick statement in the game, scoring three goals in less than a minute to take a 3-0 lead at 25:08. Marist rookie Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) stopped the bleeding when she capitalized on a free position shot for a goal at 21:58. The Wildcats would tack on three more goals before sophomore captain Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) found Begley for the freshman's first goal of the day at 14:54.
New Hampshire's Sarah Von Bargen scored two of her six goals on the day during a five minute span to boost her squad's lead to 8-2 at 6:36. Marist sophomore Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) took the Foxes on her back, scoring two goals in less than two minutes to cut the Wildcats' lead to 8-4. Diener and freshman Stephanie Garland (Long Valley. N.J.) each recorded an assist on O'Brien's goals. New Hampshire would tally a pair of goals to boost their lead before Marist's Erin Clough (Golden, Colo.) ended scoring for the half when she converted a free position goal. The damage was already done for Marist, however, as New Hampshire led 10-5 at the half.
The Wilcats came out of the break on fire, scoring four goals in the first three minutes to go up 14-5. Von Bargen would add another to their tally before Marist rookie Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) put the Foxes back on the board at 22:37, down 15-6. Time was not on the Red Foxes' side and UNH scored five more goals while Clough and Begley each added markers for Marist. Neither team would score in the last six minutes of the contest.
Begley's four caused turnovers were a game high and she tied for the ground ball high with five. The Foxes converted on four of six free-position shots but struggled to clear the ball, converting on just 10 of 17 attempts. O'Brien added three ground balls and a caused turnover to her two goals while Sumcizk and Val Amodeo (Northport, N.Y.) were Marist's draw control leaders with three each. Marist goalkeepers Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) combined for 16 saves.
New Hampshire's Von Bargen scored six goals while adding four ground balls and three draw controls. Alexa Webster had four goals and two assists while Katie Leland added two goals, four helpers.
The Red Foxes will be back in action tomorrow when they try to get back on track at Vermont with a 1:00 p.m. start.
