The Marist women's lacrosse team dropped a tough 14-5 decision at Vermont this afternoon. The young Red Fox squad falls to 1-2 on the season while the Catamounts remained a perfect 4-0. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) led a late-game charge for Marist, tallying two goals and an assist.
Vermont got off to a quick start, scoring two early goals before the Red Foxes' defense slowed things down. Marist worked its offense and freshman Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) scored the second goal of her career at 15:36 to take it to 2-1, Vermont.
The Catamounts would not lie dormant for long, rattling off 12 unanswered goals through to the second half. They led 14-1 at 12:35 following back-to-back goals by Ashleigh Wilson. Marist called time out to regain its composure and closed out the game on a high note, outscoring Vermont 4-1 in the last 12 minutes.
Diener sparked her team's late-game stand, tallying two goals and an assist during a seven minute period. Rookies Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) and Megan White (Copiague, N.Y.) each added a goal in the closing minutes of the contest.
Freshman Caroyln Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) had a solid afternoon in midfield, tallying two ground balls and two caused turnovers while classmate White added two draw controls.
Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) each played a half in goal, recording eight and seven saves, respectively.
The Red Foxes will continue their spring break trip when they head to Disney's Wide World of Sports for training this week. They will be back in action on Friday March 18 when they take on Denver in Orlando.
