Final Stats
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Buckeye freshman Joel Dalgarno had a career-high three goals and five points, leading the Ohio State men's lacrosse team (1-4) to a 13-8 victory over Marist (1-2) Monday night in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. In all, 10 Buckeyes scored a goal and 13 had at least one point in the win.
The Buckeyes led, 3-1, at the end of the first quarter. Josh Funk got the Buckeyes on the board at 12:36 with his first career goal, followed by Craig Nolan's score at 6:45, set up by Dalgarno. Ryan Blaney scored for the Red Foxes at 4:46 before Dalgarno tallied his first of three goals on the day with 2:58 left in the quarter.
Ohio State outscored Marist, 6-1, in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 9-2 lead. Nolan, assisted by Josh Wittenberg, scored just 32 seconds into the quarter and Jason Bloom made the score 5-1 with a goal, assisted by Pat Calhoun, less than a minute later (13:37). Tim Iuculano scored Marist's only goal of the quarter at 10:48, but Buckeye Peter Schell responded with a goal just 40 seconds later, putting Ohio State ahead, 6-2. OSU added three goals before the end of the quarter. Jon DeCanio , assisted by Stephen McKinlay, tallied at 5:43, followed by Casey Mulford's first goal of the season at 4:58. Senior Andrew Bender scored as time expired in the half, assisted by Dalgarno.
The Red Foxes scored the first four goals of the third quarter, cutting the Buckeye lead to three (9-6). Their goals came in a span of just under two minutes, with man-up goals by Keith Detelj at 10:12 and Bill Duerr at 8:07 sandwiched around two even-strength tallies by Andrew Walsh 13 seconds apart (at 9:15 and 9:02).
Ohio State responded with three consecutive goals. Ricky Pages scored on a fast break at 3:53 of the third quarter, followed by Dalgarno's goal at 1:39. Kevin Buchanan opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, tallying off an assist from Bender at 7:16. Marist scored its final two goals at 6:34 and 5:43, getting goals from Nick Hautau and Iuculano (man-up). Dalgarno completed his hat trick and the scoring with a goal with 1:10 left in the game.
The Buckeyes outshot the Red Foxes, 34-28, including 21-10 in the first quarter. Sophomore Bill Curry played all 60 minutes for the Buckeyes, making five saves. Marist goalie Ryan Penner had nine saves in 60 minutes in the cage.
