GEORGETOWN, DEL. - Senior Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J) went 3-4, while Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) threw a complete game in the Red Foxes 7-3 triumph over the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at the Mizuno Bash At The Beach Tournament. The win gives the Red Foxes five straight after starting the season 1-4.
Marist continued to swing hot bats as it pushed across seven runs on Saturday. After scoring just four runs in their first five games, the Red Foxes have averaged just over seven runs a game in their next five, as they have plated 36 runs in that span. On Saturday Eskin picked up three more base hits and an RBI, while Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) went 2-4 and knocked in a run in the win.
The big inning has been key for Marist in their current winning streak and Saturday was no exception. In the third inning the Foxes plated four runs with two outs to open up a comfortable lead for Rigos. The inning began with two walks and two fielder's choices to give Marist with two on and two out. Follwing a single by Eskin to load the bases, the Red Foxes designated player, Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.), drove in the first run of the inning with a single. With the bases still loaded and two outs Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) and Laurissa Riley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) drew back-to-back walks to drive in two more runs. McHugh capped off the inning with a single to drive in the fourth run of the frame.
With the lead Rigos went to work, as she fired a complete game to earn her fourth straight victory as a starter. She went seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits. She fanned four against just one walk in the win.
Marist, 6-4 on the year, will wrap up its stay in Delaware on Sunday. The Red Foxes will be in action at 9 a.m. when they take on the University of Delaware. Pool play for the tournament will begin at 11 a.m. against an opponent to be determined. If victorious in the first game of pool competition, Marist will play at 1 p.m. for the tournament title.
