Marist Beats Delaware, Falls To Providence

March 19, 2006

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, DEL. - The Marist Softball team defeated the University of Delaware 2-1 on Sunday and then fell to Providence 5-4 on its way to a 4-1 weekend at the Mizuno Bash At The Beach Tournament. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the win in game one, while Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) connected for her first career homerun against Providence.

Rigos capped off a perfect weekend by spinning a no-hitter against Delaware. In picking up her fifth win of the season, the sophomore picked up three strikeouts. The only run Delaware could push across came via an error and a fielder's choice.

Freshman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) led the way for Marist at the plate, as she went 2-3 with a run scored. Castellano and Freshman Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) both drove in runs with RBI doubles to lead Marist to its sixth straight win. With the victory Marist won its respective pool and was seeded second overall in pool play.

Marist's next test came against top seed Providence to begin pool play. The Friars were able to hold the Red Foxes scoreless until the sixth inning, as they hung on for a 5-4 victory on their way to the tournament title.

Providence held a 2-0 lead until Marist was able to cut the deficit in half in the top half of the sixth. Freshman Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass), Marist's third pitcher of the afternoon, came in the in the bottom half of the inning and surrendered three runs on just two hits, as the Friars opened up a 5-1 lead.

The Red Foxes would fight back in the top half of the seventh, as they pushed across three runs. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) led off the frame with a solo homerun, her second of the season. Following a groundout and a walk to Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, N.Y.), Castellano smoked her first career homerun to drive in two runs and cut the Providence lead to one. That would be as close as the Marist would get, however, as it dropped its first game in the last seven.

Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J.) went 2-4 with a run scored in the game, while McHugh added two base hits, a run scored and a run batted in. Freshman Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) picked up three singles in the game.

With the split on Sunday, Marist stands at 7-5 on the season and winners of six of its last seven after opening the season 1-4. Marist will be back in action on March 25 when they travel to New York City to take on the Columbia of the Ivy League. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
