Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
Freshman Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) recorded her second consecutive hat trick, but it was not enough as the Red Foxes fell to Drexel, 19-7. The Dragons remained undefeated, improving to 7-0 while the Red Foxes dropped to 1-5 with the loss.
Drexel flexed its offensive muscle early on in the contest, scoring 11 unanswered goals in the first 18 minutes, including two each from Emily Hoesch, Kerry Kelly and Gwenna Johnson. The Red Foxes managed to stop their scoring drought when Garland connected on a pass from classmate Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) at 12:08. Garland would score once more, this time assisted by freshman Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.), but the Dragons would net a pair more as well to take the score to 13-2 at half time.
Marist freshman Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) kicked off the second half on a positive note, converting a free-position shot at 28:16 to get the Red Foxes on the board. Drexel's Kelly added her third and fourth goals during the next five minutes to start a 5-0 run for the Dragons to take an 18-3 lead with 13:53 remaining.
The Red Foxes outscored the Dragons 4-1 in the final 10:00 of the contest, including Garland's third of the day, also off a feed from Sumcizk at 9:17. Just over a minute later, Begley capitalized on a Drexel turnover and scored an unassisted goal to take it to 18-5. Sophomore captain Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) tallied her seventh goal of the season at 4:14 and Marist ended the day with rookie Megan White (Copiague, N.Y.) scoring off a pass from sophomore Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) with four seconds left.
Diener led the team in ground balls (four), draw controls (three) and caused turnovers (two). Rookie Jesse Vianmari (Longmeadow, Mass.) had three ground balls.
Drexel's Katie Bradley had a well-rounded afternoon, adding a game-high five ground balls to her three goals and one assist. Kelly led all scorers with four goals.
The Red Foxes will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Oregon at 3:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
