Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
The Marist women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Oregon, 19-6 at Leonidoff Field this afternoon. The young Red Foxes' woes continued as they dropped to 1-6 with the loss while the Ducks improved to 5-4. Sophomore Val Amodeo (Northport, N.Y.) put forth a well-rounded effort for the Foxes, posting two goals, one assist and two draw controls.
Oregon opened the game on a quick 4-0 run that included a pair of goals from Kate Fleming. Marist rookie Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) got the Red Foxes on the board with a goal at 23:16 off a feed from classmate Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.). The Ducks won the ensuing draw and quickly responded as Fleming found the back of the net with an assist from Ilsa van den Berg at 22:45. Garland scored her second goal of the game four minutes later off a pass from Amodeo to take it to 5-2, Oregon.
The Ducks found themselves in the driver's seat for the balance of the half, tripped up only by Amodeo's first goal of the day at 9:20 to take it to 9-3 for the visitors. Oregon led 14-3 at the half.
The second half was quieter on the offensive front, with both teams struggling with the ball midfield. The Ducks opened up with four straight goals before Amodeo found the back of the net after a breakaway. Sumcizk would convert a free position shot to score for Marist just over four minute later, down 18-5 at 5:36. Oregon's Erin Gaebe capped the Ducks' offensive output at 3:31 and Marist rookie Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) closed out scoring for the day, assisted by Garland at 1:49.
Marist senior Ali Hupfer (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Jesse Viamari (Longmeadow, Mass.) each tallied four ground balls while Viamari and classmate Ashley Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y.) added a team-high three caused turnovers each.
Sophomore Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) snagged 10 saves in goal and freshman Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) grabbed four.
Oregon's Alison Leiner paced her team's effort with six ground balls along with four caused turnovers as well as a goal and two assists. Jen May posted a game-high four draw controls.
The Ducks bested the Foxes on draw controls, winning 18 of 27. Marist struggled to clear the ball, going 12-20 while Oregon was a perfect 8-8.
