Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team improved its record to 5-4 with an 8-7 double overtime win over Lafayette on Tuesday night. Nick Hautau (South Salem, N.Y.) scored three times for Marist and senior Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, N.Y.) gave Marist the win with his goal in the second extra period.
The game was tightly contested throughout, as the teams traded goals for much of the game. Lafayette never held an advantage in the game, as they would tie it on six occasions.
Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) got Marist on the board first with his first tally of the night at the 7:45 mark of the opening quarter. The two teams would trade the first six goals of the contest as it was tied 3-3, before O'Hara and Hautau scored in the final four minutes of the half to give the Red Foxes a 5-3 advantage at the break.
The Leopards would score the only goal of the third quarter at the 9:33 mark to cut the deficit to one goal heading into the fourth. Lafayette would outscore Marist 3-2 in the fourth to tie the score at seven, to set up the dramatics in overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, it took 3:29 of the second four minute period to decide the outcome. Walsh would end the game when he brought the ball out from behind the cage and fought off a defender to get to the front of the net. He beat Lafayette freshman goalie Jeff Canfield low and to the far side to send Marist to the victory. It was Walsh's eleventh marker of the season.
Marist would have five different goal scorers combine for their eight in the game. Hautau led the way with three, while O'Hara found the back of the net twice on Tuesday. Seniors Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, Md.), Bill Duerr (Manaquan, N.J.) and Walsh accounted for the other three markers on the evening. Duerr and Walsh would also add assists in the tilt.
Lafayette was led on offense by two multiple goal scorers as Sean Burek notched a hat trick and Trevor Ortolano scored twice coming off the bench.
Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) got the win in the cage for Marist, as he made 12 saves in improving his record to 5-4 on the season. In addition Penner picked up two ground balls in the winning effort.
Sophomore face-off specialist Dan Needle (Baldswinville, N.Y.) won 14 of the 20 draws in the game and scooped up eight ground balls for the Red Foxes. Marist was also good on 14 of their 15 clearing attempts in the game and it out shot Lafayette by a 31-27 count in the game.
The extra man advantage was also a plus for Marist who had been struggling with man up opportunities. On Tuesday night it went 3-5 with the extra man, as Iuculano and Hautau accounted for the three tallies.
Marist will be off until Saturday afternoon when it hosts Bellermine to Leonidoff Field. Face-off for the non-conference tilt is scheduled for 1 p.m.
