Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
Sophomore captain Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored five goals for the second consecutive game, but it was not enough as Marist fell to St. Mary's (CA), 15-13. Eight different Red Foxes had a goal or an assist in the contest. The visiting Gaels made an impressive comeback after being down 9-6 at halftime, rallying for the win.
Diener set the tone with her first goal of the day, converting a free-position at 25:15 to give Marist a 1-0 lead. It was back and forth for the next several goals, with St. Mary's' Kim Reny scoring her first of six goals at 23:01 to get her team started. Marist rookie Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) scored at 21:30 before Dana Elfvin connected for the Gaels at 20:12.
Marist sophomore Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) connected on a feed from behind the cage from classmate Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) to give Marist a 3-2 lead at 18:46. That would be short lived as Reny tallied two goals in less than 20 seconds to give St. Mary's its first lead of the contest. Current MAAC Rookie of the Week Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) scored two quick goals of her own to gain the lead for the Foxes before Reny tied it again, 5-5 at 7:17.
Diener then responded with a faster scoring burst than Reny's, scoring two goals between 7:07 and 6:51. She took matters into her own hands, grabbing the draw after Reny's goal and plowing through the St. Mary's defense for a goal. Freshman Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) grabbed the ensuing draw and passed it to Diener for a repeat performance, giving Marist a 7-5 lead.
Garland got in on the scoring herself, connecting off a feed from Carnabuci at 5:13 before Diener scored off a free position to put the Foxes up 9-5 at 4:31. St. Mary's Jen Utley tallied an unassisted goal with 1:21 remaining to pull her team within three, down 9-6 at half time.
The Gaels opened the second half with a free position goal from Reny at 26:13 before Marist tallied a pair from Noftsker and Begley. Marist held an 11-7 lead at 23:14 and seemed in control of the contest before St. Mary's went on a 6-0 run, including three goals from Molly Wagner to take a 13-11 lead over the Foxes with just five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Red Foxes kept their composure with Nofstker stalking the Gaels' goalie for nearly a minute before making her move to score at 4:36. Then, Diener tallied her biggest goal of the day off a feed from freshman Megan Frey (Pearl River, N.J.) to tie it at 13-13 with 1:38 remaining.
St. Mary's took control of the ensuing draw and Wagner drew the free position attempt, converting at 1:03 to give her team the 14-13 lead. That took the wind out of the Foxes' sails and the Gaels took a 15-13 final.
Marist goalkeeper Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded 15 saves in the loss along with three ground balls. Begley added a team-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls along with her two goals.
Noftsker finished the day with five points on four goals and an assist while Carnabuci added a career-high four assists.
With her scoring effort today, Diener moved into fourth place on Marist's career goals scored list with 78 (third place: 80) and fifth place on the career scoring (points) list with 98 (fourth place: 101).
The Red Foxes (4-9/2-2 MAAC) will be back in MAAC action on Wednesday April 19 when they host Fairfield at 4:00 p.m.
