April 22, 2006

Final Stats

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Nine different Red Foxes scored goals and 23 saw action in a 14-5 victory at Iona this afternoon. The win brings Marist (5-10/3-3 MAAC) a step closer to making the MAAC Tournament and a victory tomorrow against Manhattan will clinch a playoff berth.

Marist got to work quickly off the opening draw, scoring early and often including a rocket from freshman Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) and two from sophomore captain Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) to go up 3-0 at 23:03. Iona's Jaclyn O'Leary converted a pass from Lisa Baron to get her team on the board at 20:28.

The Red Foxes regained control and went on a 6-0 run that started with rookie Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) hammering home a smooth shot off a beautiful pass from Diener. That was quickly followed by a pair of unassisted goals from sophomores Val Amodeo (Northport, N.Y.) and Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) less than 20 seconds apart to take a 6-1 lead at 11:16.

Marist teamed up on its next three tallies of the half, all assisted goals. Amodeo converted again off a feed from Garland, then classmate Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) scored from a pass by Noftsker. Diener closed out scoring for the half for the Foxes at 3:59, firing a rocket after a pass from freshman defender Jesse Viamari (Longmeadow, Mass.). The assist was the first of her collegiate career. Iona won the ensuing draw and Marisa Audley snuck a goal past Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.),taking the score to 9-2, Marist at the half.

Following the break, Diener scored her fourth goal of the day, unassisted at 26:27 to give Marist a 10-2 edge. She continued to involve herself in the offense, assisting on O'Brien's tally just minutes later at 23:35. Iona's Jaclyn and Rachel O'Leary each scored a pair of unanswered goals to cut Marist's lead to 11-4 at 17:07.

With a sizeable lead, Head Coach Noelle Cebron utilized her bench players freely and was rewarded as Marist outscored Iona 3-1 in the last 13 minutes. Freshman Julia Schelkun (Coronado, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal at 12:39 before senior starter Tara Mullins (Holmdel, N.J.) had her first tally of the day off a feed from Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.). Audley scored again for Iona at 1:25 but Marist freshman Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) answered back, converting a free position shot with 25 seconds left to seal the 14-5 win.

Burkhard, Marist's starting goalkeeper, tallied 13 saves and allowed a season low four goals in 47:21 minutes of work. The level of play remained just as high when rookie Kyle Jansky (Bethpage, N.Y.) took over, making six saves in just over 12 minutes.

Diener finished the day with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists, also adding three caused turnovers and three draw controls. In all, nine players had goals, five had assists and 18 had at least one draw control. O'Brien added two goals and her seven groundballs put her one shy of tying the program's single-game record.

The Foxes had 33 shots to the Gaels' 29 and improved their clearing to 23-29.

Marist hosts Manhattan at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday) and the winner will earn a trip to the MAAC Tournament. The squad's two seniors, Mullins and defender Ali Hupfer (Hicksville, N.Y.), will be honored prior to opening draw.
