NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Freshman Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored four times in Marist's two games as the Red Foxes topped Villanova 9-7 in overtime and St. Francis (N.Y.) 12-7. With the sweep Marist ends the regular season at 21-12 overall and 8-2 in the MAAC Water Polo League. The Red Foxes will be the second seed in this weekend's MAAC Tournament.
The Foxes staked Villanova to a 5-0 lead in the opening game of the day, before outscoring the Wildcats 9-2 the rest of the way to win in overtime. The game was the Red Foxes fourth overtime game of the season, and they stand at 3-1 in games decided in extra time. Jillian Jefferds led the offensive charge for Marist with three goals. Jefferds also added two assists and two steals in the contest. McCahill and senior Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added two markers in the game and freshman Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) picked up two steals for Marist.
Marist's sophomore goalie tandem of Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Katy Zweifel (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) each played two quarters in the win. Davis made seven saves in the tilt, while Zweifel made 10.
Marist rounded out its 4-0 weekend with a 12-7 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.). Marist jumped out to a quick lead in the game as it held a 7-1 advantage at the half. Marist had nine different goals scorers in the win, led by Weston, McCahill and Allison Rader (Lansdale, Pa.) who each had two goals. Marist also had four players record multiple assists, as Jefferds, Weston, McCahill and Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) each had two helpers. McCahill and Abigail Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) had two steals apiece in the win.
Davis and Zweifel again split time in the cage, with Davis making seven saves and Zweifel stopping eight Terrier shots.
Marist will be back in action April 29 when it plays in the semifinals of the MAAC Water Polo League Championship. Marist will be the number two seed in the tournament which it will host.
