FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Marist baseball team captured a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader over Fairfield Monday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. As almost six inches of rain fell on the Bridgeport area over the weekend, the series was postponed until this afternoon.
Marist (15-21, 9-5 MAAC) won the first game 11-2, and despite a solid pitching performance from junior Ed Kamintzky, took the nightcap, 2-1. Kamintzky (3-4) gave the Stags (11-22, 6-8 MAAC) seven innings of four-hit ball, while redshirt senior George Heath (4-3, Henrietta, N.Y.) allowed no earned runs and just four hits over the course of six innings with three strikeouts. Junior closer Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) finished off his eighth save of the season with a perfect seventh inning.
The Red Foxes scored the first run of the second game, in the top of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.) reached on an error, then stole second and moved to third on another error by the Fairfield defense. Then junior right fielder Travis Musolf (Manchester, N.J.) grounded out, which allowed Most to come home.
Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the first, as sophomore Albie DeSimone roped a two out single to left field. He then stole second, and came home when senior John Scaife reached on a fielding error by Marist freshman second baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.).
After getting out of the first inning with a pair of strikeouts, Kamintzky retired 10 of the next 12 batters that he faced.
In the top of the seventh inning, Marist loaded the bases and pushed across a run when Meyer dove headfirst into first base, beating out what appeared to be a sure 6-4-3 double play ball that would have ended the Red Foxes' inning.
DeSimone, Scaife, junior Brian Schappert, and sophomore Adam Chilelli each collected hits for the Stags. Junior left fielder Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario) collected a pair of hits for Marist.
In the first game, Marist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then two in the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Red Foxes would also add three in the top of the eighth inning.
Fairfield scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. DeSimone's infield single, allowed Chilelli to score from third, after leading the inning off with a double to left field. DeSimone added another RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning, with a single up the middle to plate freshman Dave Jermine. Jermine reached on a pinch-hit single to right field.
DeSimone went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Scaife, sophomore Peter Allen and Chilelli each had doubles for Fairfield.
Marist was led in the contest by seven combined RBIs between junior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) and junior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.). Meyer and Most also notched four hits, while Most had top honors with four runs scored. Most also led off the sixth inning with the first home run of his career, a line drive over the wall in right.
Redshirt senior Jonathan Smith (Woonsocket, R.I.) picked up his third win of the season, tossing six innings with one run and three hits. He also struck out six and walked two.
The Red Foxes will be back in action with a doubleheader at home on Tuesday against Brown at 3 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
