Marist Bested By Providence 9-6

April 26, 2006

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team dropped its second straight MAAC decision when it fell to Providence 9-6 on Wednesday night. Senior Andrew Walsh scored two goals for Marist who fell to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC Lacrosse League.

Both teams came into the game with identical records of 6-6 and 4-2 in league play, but Providence came out of the gates charging as it scored the first three goals of the tilt. Tom Kelly scored two of Providence's three first quarter goals as the Friars held a 3-1 advantage after one quarter of play.

Marist would cut the lead to 3-2 on goals by Walsh and Bill Duerr (Manasquan, N.J.), but the Friars would score two of the next three goals to hold a 5-3 lead at halftime.

Walsh would score his second goal of the game with 12:08 to go in the third quarter to get Marist to within a goal at 5-4, but that would be as close as the Foxes would come the rest of the night. Providence would go on to score three straight goals to end the third to take a four goal lead into the fourth.

Marist would fight back to within 8-6 on goals by Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) and Jim Wiederhold (Bridgewater, N.J.), but the Friars' Robert Lamontagne would add an insurance tally for Providence to give them the final 9-6 advantage.

Freshman goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown, N.Y.) would make nine saves in the contest as his record on the season dropped to 6-7.

The Red Foxes held the advantage in shots at 32-26 and they went 2-8 with the extra man opportunity. Sophomore face-off man Dan Needle won 10 of the 19 face-offs he took in the game.

Marist will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Buffalo for a must win game with Canisius. Face-off on Saturday night is scheduled for 7 p.m.
