POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Andrew Silva's Marist Women's Water Polo team advanced to its first ever MAAC Championship game by defeating Iona 9-3 in the conference semifinals on Saturday afternoon. After trailing 2-1 early on, the Red Foxes reeled off seven unanswered goals to control the game and set up a showdown with top seeded Wagner on Sunday.
Marist had three multiple goals scorers among the five that registered tallies in the win. Julie Wade (Whittier, Calif.), a late addition to the starting lineup, led Marist with three goals on the afternoon. Wade also tallied a steal in the winning effort. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each found the back of the net twice for Marist. Grisey also added an assist for the Foxes. Abigail Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) and Allison Rader (Lansdown, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for Marist.
Sophomore Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) got the nod in the cage for Marist. Davis went the distance on Saturday, making 18 saves and allowing just three goals to send Marist to the victory.
The Red Foxes will be back in the pool tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on Wagner for a chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The championship game will be preceded by the consolation match which features Villanova and Iona at 12 p.m.
