POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team ran its winning streak to 13 games with a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned win number 13 in game one, while Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) smacked two home runs in a 6-1 win.
A five run first inning for Marist left little doubt of the outcome. The frame was highlighted by a three-run home run by Green, her first of two in the game. Green would give the Red Foxes a six run advantage in the second inning with a solo home run. Green would go 2-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Green was the only player to record multiple hits in game one, as Marist pounded out 10 for the game.
Rigos moved her record to 13-2 with the win, as she went the distance in game one. Over seven innings, Rigos would allow just three hits and one earned run. She would record eight strikeouts against just four walks. The lone run Rigos surrendered was scored on a solo home run by Marissa Fluery.
Marist would use the long ball again in game two, as it picked up the sweep with a 6-4 triumph. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) would slug two in the game, while freshman Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) would drive out her first career round tripper in the fifth inning.
McHugh led off the bottom of the first inning with her ninth home run of the season to center field. McHugh would slam her tenth home run in the second inning, this time it was a three-run shot to key the four-run fifth. McHugh was perfect at the plate in game two, as she went 2-2 with two runs scored and four RBI. McHugh would also walk twice in the contest.
With Marist holding a 5-3 lead in the fifth, Pomes led off the frame with a drive over the left field fence to give Marist an insurance run. Pomes would also score two runs in the game.
Kristen Merlino got the start for Marist and went four solid innings in earning her second victory of the season. She would surrender just four base hits and struck out three in the win. Green would come on the throw the final three innings to record her first career save. Green would give up one earned run in three innings and struck out three.
The streaking Red Foxes have now one 13 straight games and have won 19 of their last 20 games in moving to 20-5 on the season. Marist will resume MAAC play this Saturday when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. for a doubleheader with the Broncs of Rider.
