Red Foxes Open MAAC Slate With Sweep

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team opened its MAAC schedule by beating Siena 6-4 and Villanova 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The two wins moves Marist's record to 15-10 on the season and breaks the previous school record for wins in a season which was 13 set last year.

The Red Foxes had to come from behind to defeat the Saints, as they trailed 4-3 after three quarters of play. Marist outscored Siena 3-0 in the final period to earn the victory and break the record. Junior captain Jillian Jefferds (Napperville, Ill.) and freshman Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) each recorded two goals in the game. Kari Weston (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) accounted for the other two Marist tallies. Weston added four steals in the contest, while McCahill recorded four steals and drew four ejections in the win.

Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) made eight saves in the victory, while Katy Zweifel (san Luis Obispo, Calif.) recorded a pair of stops in the cage for Marist.

Marist had to come from behind again in its second game of the day, as it defeated Villanova 4-2. The Wildcats held a 2-0 advantage after the first quarter, but were shut out the rest of the way as Marist outscored them 4-0 over the final three periods.

Weston had two markers for Marist in the win, while Allison Rader (Lansdale, Pa.) and Caitlin Hopkins (Beaverton, Ore.) also recorded goals for the Red Foxes. Weston would add three steals and a pair of assists in the Foxes fifteenth win of the season.

Davis continued her solid play in the cage, as she made 11 stops in the win, while Zweifel recorded seven saves in the win.

At 15-10 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC, Marist will return to the McCann Natatorium on Sunday when it hosts Iona and Wagner to round out the weekend. Prior to the Iona game at 10:30 a..m Marist will honor its three seniors, Amanda Long (Stockton, Calif.), Abigail Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.) and Grisey. Festivities begin at 10:15 a.m.
