POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Women's Water Polo team split a pair of home league games on Sunday, as it defeated Iona 5-4 in overtime and then fell to Wagner 11-4. Freshman Julie Wade (Whittier, Calif.) scored two goals in the win, including the game winner in the second overtime period.
On senior day in the McCann Center it was the youth of the Red Foxes that carried them to the win. Of their five goals, four of them were scored by freshmen. The Red Foxes first goal of the game belongs to senior Amanda Long (Stockton, Calif.) who was honored prior to the game along with Mary Grisey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Abigail Hatcher (Evanston, Ill.).
Elizabeth Davis (Albuquerque, N.M.) got the call in the cage on Sunday and made 11 saves in Marist's sixteenth win of the season.
In the second game of the day, Marist could not get anything going against the Seahawks. Katelin McCahill (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored two goals late in the game for Marist and also drew six ejections in the contest.
Wagner proved to be too much for Marist, however, as it featured seven different goal scorers in the game. The Seahawks were led by Courtney Crase with two markers and Stacey Travous who scored three times for Wagner.
With the split on Sunday, Marist stands at 16-11 on the season and 3-1 in the MAAC Water Polo League. Marist will be back in action on April 15 when it travels to Villanova, Pa. to tussle with Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.).
