POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist junior linebacker Dan Smith captured MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday for his fine performance in the Red Foxes' 34-6 loss at Central Connecticut State Saturday afternoon.

The Reston, Va. native tied a I-AA school record with 17 tackles (including one tackle for loss) during the contest. John Healy set the previous mark with 17 stops at Lafayette on Sept. 6, 2003.

The Red Foxes will open their home slate with a 7 p.m. game Saturday against Sacred Heart. Marist defeated the Pioneers 22-20 last season in Fairfield, Conn.
