Red Foxes Look To 'Raise The Bar' In MAAC Tourney

Nov. 9, 2007

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The season long goal for the Marist women's soccer team was to get the chance to play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament (MAAC), which is being held on their home field this weekend. Not only did the Red Foxes reach that goal, they put themselves in the best possible situation by being crowned regular season MAAC champs and earning the number one seed in the tournament.

This weekend, the Red Foxes will look to take the next step by winning the conference tournament, and reaching the programs first ever NCAA Tournament.

Marist finished the season with a 7-1-1 (22 pts.) conference record and won the regular season title by two points over second place Fairfield. Their only hiccup came in a match at home on October 21st, versus Manhattan.

Since that home loss, the Red Foxes have been as strong as ever. They finished the regular season with a 3-0-1 stretch and outscored there opponents 10-1 during that time.

"We started the season with the goal of playing this weekend and we accomplished that goal. All year we worked hard, and were the definition of a true team. We are where we should be," Marist head Coach Elizabeth Roper said. "We achieved our goal of making this tournament, and now we have to raise the bar."

Though Marist is the one seed, they are the only team in the year's tournament that was not in the tournament last year.

Sophomore Katie Zasly (Foster City, Calif.) is happy with the team and their success but wants more. "We are happy with what we've done, and it's great to be the number one seed in the tournament we are hosting, but there is still a lot of work to do. We are not content with being here, we want to win."

The Red Foxes will take on defending tournament champion Niagara in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. The winner will play Fairfield or Loyola on Sunday at 12 p.m.

A week ago today, the Red Foxes beat the Purple Eagles 3-1. They used three second half goals and an amazing save by keeper Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) on a Niagara PK in the win.

When asked what the game plan for the match tonight is Roper put it simply. "We have to play the same way we did in the second half (last Friday)."

If the Red Foxes are able to do that, there is no doubt they should find themselves playing for the MAAC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon.
