EASTON, Pa. - The Marist women's lacrosse team opened its 2007 season on Wednesday with a resounding 18-8 victory over Lafayette. Freshman Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored a team-high three goals in her first collegiate game, while classmate Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished with a goal and four assists for a game-high five points in her debut.
The Red Foxes started strong, as junior midfielder Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) got Marist on the board just 14 seconds into the contest. Just 3:54 in, Marist built a 4-0 lead on the strength a goal by Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) and two from Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.). Garland also had an assist on Noftsker's goal, and Rinefierd assisted on both of Garland's goal.
After a Lafayette goal cut the Marist advantage to 4-1, the Red Foxes responded with nine unanswered goals from eight different players - Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.), Diener, Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.), Erin Wilson (Ada, Mich.), Noftsker, Falco, Rinefierd and Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.). Sumcizk had two goals in that span. Falco added two more goals in the second half, and Begley, Carnabuci and Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) added one second-half tally apiece.
Falco also led the Red Foxes in shots with eight and ground balls with four. Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) made 12 saves in goal. Marist outshot Lafayette by a margin of 36-24.
Maddy Booth led Lafayette (0-1) with three goals.
The Red Foxes will return to action on March 10 at Temple.
