Final Stats
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 7-1 baseball decision past visiting Marist College Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (14-6) won their fifth consecutive game, and seventh in the last eight, while led by senior Tyler Childress (2-4, 5 RBI) for the second-straight day with two hits and five RBI -- including a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Longwood and Marist (1-7) will play again on Sunday, March 11, in the three-game series finale at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. in Farmville.
Longwood allowed Marist an unearned run in the fifth inning before scoring three runs in the sixth inning, and four more runs in the seventh inning en route to the home triumph. In the fifth, the Red Foxes loaded the bases with two outs courtesy an error on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.), a fielder's choice play that allowed senior second baseman Matthew Lesyk (Abbotsford, British Columbia) to reach base, and a pair of two-out walks -- the latter to senior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) to plate Glasser.
In the sixth, Childress blasted a one-out home run to left field just to the left of the 375-foot sign that also scored senior captain Tyler Ames (2-3) and sophomore Jon Quigley (2-3) for Longwood. It was the first home run of the season for Childress, and the ninth of his career. Ames and Quigley had each reached base on one-out singles.
In the seventh, Childress again came through with the clutch hit -- this time a one-out, two-run single to right-center field after Marist had intentionally-walked the previous batter (Quigley) to load the bases -- scoring sophomore Robbie Bailey (2-5, RBI) and junior Nick von Gersdorff (1-1). Bailey had reached on an RBI single through the right side that scored freshman Scott Kimble (1-4) who had led-off the inning with a single before von Gersdorff drew a pinch-hit walk. The Lancers scored their final run as von Gersdorff crossed the plate on an RBI ground-ball out by sophomore Paul Heidler II (1-4, RBI).
Longwood sophomore right-handed pitcher John Walker II (2-0) earned the pitching win in relief with the final 4.1 innings on the mound, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and a hit batter. Walker has now made six appearances this season while pitching 21.2 innings in relief, and has an excellent 0.83 ERA with 13 strikeouts. Classmate and left-handed pitcher Kevin Light had pitched the first 4.2 innings, yielding just one hit as well and the unearned run with two strikeouts and two walks.
Freshman lefthander Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) took the mound loss for Marist, allowing nine hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts over the first 5.1 innings. Freshman designated hitter Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) collected the only two hits for the Red Foxes, including a double.
